Pavement Evaluation—A Case Study at Peenya Industrial Area–Phase I, Bengaluru

The pavements constructed in Industrial areas should be structurally stable to sustain heavy wheel loads imposed by commercial vehicles. Unstable pavements should be subjected to appropriate and timely maintenance intervention for their long-term sustainability. Hence, pavement evaluation studies are necessary to assess both the functional and structural adequacy of existing pavements against traffic loading and review them to improve the transportation infrastructure in industrial areas. This paper presents detailed structural and functional evaluation studies conducted for selected industrial roads in the Peenya Industrial Area, Bangalore. The structural evaluation of pavement is performed by Benkelman Beam Deflection (BBD) studies. Unevenness of road surface was measured using MERLIN, and pavement surface friction was determined by Simple Portable Pendulum Skid Resistance Tester. Pavement distress surveys were conducted through a visual approach as per ASTM-D6433-11 specifications, and the Pavement Condition Index (PCI) is rated for roads according to the standard PCI rating scale.
