Citizens’ Perception of Smart City Projects in Salem

This abstract provides an overview of a comprehensive study conducted to explore the citizens’ perception of smart city projects in Salem, a city in Tamil Nadu, India. The aim of the research was to understand how the residents of Salem perceive the implementation and impact of various smart city initiatives in their day-to-day lives. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather data and analyse the citizens’ perspectives. The research sample consisted of a diverse group of participants, including residents from different socioeconomic backgrounds, age groups, and professions. The survey questionnaire was designed to gather demographic information, assess awareness and utilization of smart city services, and gauge citizens’ satisfaction levels. The study also highlighted the impact of socioeconomic factors on the perception of smart city projects, with variations observed among different demographic groups. Furthermore, the research explored the factors influencing citizens’ perception, including the accessibility and affordability of smart city services, the level of engagement and communication from the local government, and the perceived benefits in terms of improved quality of life and sustainability. The study shed light on the areas where citizens felt more involvement and improvement were needed, such as citizen participation in decision-making processes and the provision of digital literacy programs to ensure equitable access to smart city services. This case study provides valuable insights for policymakers, city planners, and local authorities involved in smart city initiatives. Understanding citizens’ perception is crucial for such projects’ successful implementation and long-term sustainability. The findings can contribute to the refinement and enhancement of existing smart city strategies in Salem, while also offering valuable lessons for other cities undertaking similar initiatives.
