In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies have been increasingly used in various fields of application. From the medical field to environmental protection, transport, law enforcement and security, and many other sectors. Also in the field of Sustainable Urban Development (SUD), Artificial Intelligence technologies can be considered to address the social and economic environmental sustainability challenges of cities. However, the use of AI for Sustainable Urban Development is still an under-explored area of research. In fact, few studies have carried out a systematic assessment of the state of the art on the topic. Therefore, this study aims to present a Systematic Survey on how AI technologies can support Sustainable Urban Development, in order to understand which technologies are most widely used, the potential benefits and any critical issues arising from the use of Artificial Intelligence for sustainable urban regeneration. The Systematic Survey revealed that the use of AI is also developing in this field. Yet, the use of Artificial Intelligence technologies requires meeting important challenges in the near future. These include transparency and traceability in the development of Artificial Intelligence, sustainability and ethics in the use of AI technologies concerning all Stakeholders and the relevant community, and the implementation of policies and regulations regarding the adoption of Artificial Intelligence tools in the context of Sustainable Urban Development.
