The urban population is increasing rapidly in Pakistan especially in large cities as people are migrating from Rural to Urban areas for better life opportunities. This phenomenon has far-reaching effects on the region’s climate. Lahore being the second largest city in the country, has undergone a massive increase in its urban population; and the urban population of the world will increase almost 75% by 2030 due to urbanization. This increase in population is resulting in increased resource consumption within the urban context, which in turn affects the urban climate, giving rise to phenomena such as the UHI (urban heat island) effect. The climate of Lahore is semi-arid therefore, the problems mentioned above increase the consumption of energy for cooling purposes in buildings. In this chapter, we will discuss the operational energy increase with the expansion of urbanization and its negative effects on the urban climate. The increase in air conditioning due to hot weather in Lahore has caused a massive surge of almost 60% in electricity consumption. These energies release GHG Emissions which play a key role in global warming and climate change. Moreover, Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most significant among GHGs, contributing more than 70% of atmospheric concentrations. So, it is vital to control the production of GHG to take a step towards net zero carbon emissions as Pakistan is one of the signatories of the 2015 Paris Agreement. This problem however can be solved by adopting Passive evaporative cooling techniques. Introduced to this part of the region by the Mughals, this array of different strategies helped Mughal-era designers create comfortable indoor living conditions. It will also be beneficial for the sustainability of the urban climate of Lahore and if opted in contemporary architectural designs, can help reduce electricity consumption resulting in controlling carbon emissions.
