Management of Metal Scrap from Construction Site for a Sustainable Construction Practice in Malaysia: A Pilot Case Study

This paper is a pilot study on the value creation from the construction site waste management. The pilot study is to explore any sustainable construction site waste management practice such as reuse, reduce or/and recycle in construction site in Malaysia. Proper management of construction site metal scrap is one of the steps to ensure sustainable environment as some of it can be dangerous and hazardous. Furthermore, a proper onsite waste management is one of the requirements to acquire a green building status. Despite this, not many constructions site adopted this approach. Therefore, the main objective of this research is to explore the flow of metal scrap disposal on the construction site. By exploring this flow, one can check whether a proper and sustainable way of managing the metal scrap on the construction site is being practised. This research adopted a semi-structured in-depth interview method to explore the flow of metal scrap disposal on a construction site. This is done to trace the material flow whether it is being reduced, reused or recycled onsite. The result of the research revealed that some of the metal scrap is actually did not end up on the recycling centre but rather being disposed on random land. This indicated an existence of poor metal scrap management on the construction site which signals crucial involvement from the government and law enforcer. Thus, the economy generation from being sustainable is an angle of no stress as sustainability is regarded as welfare practice but not profit making on the construction site which collapses the sustainability pillars of society, environment and economy.
