Environmental Sustainability of AI: Estimating \(CO_2\) e Emissions Across Cloud, Edge, and Fog Paradigms
摘要
This research aims to assess the environmental impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI), focusing on carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions, a comprehensive measure that includes greenhouse gases. With rising trends in global CO2e emissions calling for urgent remediation of environmental sustainability, this paper assesses the environmental footprint of AI systems in the context of web engineering across the computing continuum, including cloud, edge and fog paradigms. The study seeks to strike a balance between AI advances and environmental sustainability. The core contribution of this paper is the development of a novel equation for estimating CO2e emissions from AI models, providing a metric for assessing the environmental impact of AI tools.
