Classification and Assessment of Mental Disorder

Specific skills and competencies are required to effectively assess, diagnose, treat, support, and refer people with mental disorders. Although psychiatric social workers are not directly involved in determining a diagnosis, they must share ownership when working as part of a multi-disciplinary team. It is essential for psychiatric social workers to have in-depth knowledge and understanding of the primary signs and symptoms of different mental disorders as this helps during their psycho-social interventions.
