The profession developed because of its uniqueness in application and necessity in evidence-based practice. The close affiliation with the medical profession provided a challenging stimulus and continuous scrutiny from the start, which were powerful incentives for growth. Psychiatric social work professionals are more expert and use precise methodology in the study and treatment of the individual situation; they have more accurate knowledge that helps individuals to develop positive mental health. PSW originated from the focus on various influences, which had brought about, on the part of social work, more attention to the mental or psychological factors in social maladjustment, and on the part of psychiatry, increasing attention to the social needs of the patient.
