Kalanamak, a landrace of rice (Oryza sativa L.), often referred as ‘Buddha Rice,’ holds a significant place in the cultural and agricultural history of India. This aromatic rice variety, believed to be gifted by Gautam Buddha himself to the farmers of Siddharthnagar district, has witnessed a remarkable journey from ancient ascent to near extinction and modern revival to reach to global level. Historically prized for its unique fragrance, taste, and nutritional benefits, Kalanamak rice saw a decline during the Green Revolution due to its lower yield compared to modern rice varieties. However, dedicated efforts by agricultural scientists, farmers, and policymakers have led to its resurgence, transforming it into a symbol of sustainable agriculture and economic empowerment. This paper explores the socio-economic impacts, government initiatives, and scientific advancements that have contributed to the revival of Kalanamak rice. Key government initiatives, such as the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme and the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, have played pivotal roles in promoting and protecting this heritage crop. The establishment of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and the use of e-commerce platforms have significantly enhanced the market reach and profitability of Kalanamak rice, benefiting local farmers and the regional economy. Furthermore, the development of improved and dwarf varieties by scientists like Dr. Ram Chet Chaudhary has addressed agronomic challenges, making Kalanamak rice cultivation more viable. The paper also highlights the nutritional superiority of Kalanamak rice, rich in iron, zinc, and protein, and its suitability for diabetics due to its low glycemic index. These health benefits have led to its inclusion in the Indian government’s Nutri-Farm Scheme, promoting its cultivation and consumption among nutritionally vulnerable populations. However, the success of Kalanamak rice faces challenges, particularly in ensuring authenticity and quality control amidst the proliferation of counterfeit products. Advanced technologies such as blockchain and QR code-based traceability systems are proposed to combat these issues.
