Suicide Prevention and Management Among Indian Farmer: A Systematic Review
摘要
India ranks second in the world in terms of agricultural production, and more than 50% of the employed people in India are in the agriculture sector, which contributes 17–18% of the country’s GDP. The role of Indian farmers is like the backbone of the country’s economy and agriculture sector. Many agricultural activities in India are seen as a very old tradition, in which the farmer works hard and grows crops on the land with the least harm to the environment. Indian farmers also face many challenges, including fluctuating weather, limited access to modern technology, water issues, uncertainty in the market; Indian farmers still face financial crisis, crop failure, indebtedness, lack of government support, land fragmentation, lack of access to credit and insurance, pesticide and chemical exposure, climate change, social stigma and mental health issues etc. Those problems weaken the strong will of the Indian farmers, who have to face many miseries and sufferings, some of whom become helpless and reach the verge of ending their lives. The Government of India is continuously working to deal with all these problems, for which many policies and initiatives have been taken as well as agricultural infrastructure, sustainable agricultural practices were promoted. Loans and subsidies were also provided, and farmers were linked to the market for easy purchase and sale of their crops. This approach has the potential to provide comfort to distressed farmers, reduce suicide rates, alleviate the burden on their families and offer a comprehensive solution to the issue of farmer suicides. The conclusion of the study provides different approaches to preventive behaviour like awareness and mental health, dept restructuring, accessibility and adoptability of health care and management of farmer suicide.
