Uncovering the Potential of Neuromodulation in Suicidal Behaviour

Roughly 30% of the psychiatric disorders have been found to be non-responsive or refractory to conventional treatment options. There has been a pressing need to elucidate the neural correlates (or signatures) and the novel therapeutics targeting them. As per International Neuromodulation Society, neuromodulation is defined as the science of modulating the neural interface via electrical, electro-magnetic or chemical stimulation. It consists of wide array of interventions both invasive and non-invasive. Neuromodulation usage has lately grown in clinical and research practices and that too worldwide. Neuromodulation practices such as Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) have gained FDA approval for major depression and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) respectively. Suicidality is a core feature found among severe mental disorders. This chapter shall discuss the overall evidence and suicidality with regards to different neuromodulation techniques such as TMS, tDCS, ECT, MST, VNS, DBS etc. Given therapeutic approaches shall be discussed with respect to therapeutic efficacy, durability, feasibility, and tolerability pertaining to suicidality. The infrastructure required and ethical aspects will also be discussed.
