Pre-stressed, Pre-cast Concrete Slab System for Multi Storey Buildings

Concrete floor slab is an essential structural element of multi storey buildings. Conventional in-situ floor slab system has notable deficiencies such as high cost, large construction period, high material usage and high skill and unskilled labour requirement. To overcome these deficiencies pre-stressed, pre-cast slab system was designed and developed. This slab system was designed aiming residential building and limiting maximum span to 6.1 m. The cross section of the pre-stressed slab panel is rectangular shape (127 mm × 610 mm) with 5 numbers of holes of 76 mm diameter. When varying span, cross section is kept unchanged while changing the reinforcement. A single slab panel of the size 0.6m x 6.1m was constructed and tested. The failure load of the slab panel was 54% greater than the design load of the slab system. Then three numbers of slab panels of size 0.6 m × 6.1 m were constructed. Three slab panels were combined and rendered on top side. Load testing was carried out for slab system of size 1.8 m × 6.1 m. The failure load of the slab system is 56% greater than the design load of the slab system. Hence, this slab system is structurally well performed. Introduction of holes inside the slab system reduces the self-weight by 29.28% compared to a solid section of same size. It is estimated that the newly designed slab system is 20% cost effective over a conventional in-situ slab system. The integrated holes can be used for laying out wiring and plumbing etc.
