Enhancing the Durability and Resilience of School Buildings in Sri Lanka: An Integrative Study of Common Defects and Remedial Measures

This research paper examines the prevalent defects and damages in typical school buildings across Sri Lanka, based on detailed condition assessments conducted by the National Building Research Organization, Sri Lanka. These condition assessments utilized visual observations from field investigations and test results from both core samples and non-destructive tests, including half-cell potential, ultrasonic pulse velocity, carbonation, and cover meter tests. The study identified significant structural and non-structural issues compromising the structural integrity and durability of these buildings. This research paper proposes targeted remedial measures to enhance the resilience and durability of the buildings. By combining comprehensive data analysis with technical evaluations, the research provides practical and innovative solutions for improving construction and maintenance practices in these school buildings. The findings in this research aim to assist policymakers, school administrators, and engineers in implementing effective strategies to ensure the safety, structural integrity, resilience, and durability of typical school buildings in Sri Lanka.
