Smart Agriculture Using Internet of Things (IoT)

Agriculture plays a crucial role in Sri Lanka’s economy and sustains livelihoods, particularly for rural communities engaged in diverse activities such as mushroom and floricultural cultivation inside protective-agricultural structures. Protected agricultural structures have recently expanded in Sri Lanka, driven by modern advancements such as sensors and user-friendly mobile apps. Phase I of the project develops an automated electronic system for maintaining precise temperature and humidity levels for mushroom cultivation without considering external temperature and humidity conditions, by reducing human intervention. This innovative approach will enhance efficiency and yield. Floricultural products such as cut flowers, foliage, live plants and decorative plants have become a significant export for Sri Lanka, contributing considerably to the country’s economy. Phase II of the project will expand the automated approach to the floriculture sector by implementing an automated watering system that monitors soil moisture levels which are set by the user. Users can set their desired moisture content, ensuring optimal hydration for plants while minimizing water waste. Additionally, temperature control within the protective agriculture environment will be managed by an automated sprinkler based cooling system that is automated based on user-defined temperature settings. This integration will enhance the growing environment’s efficiency and responsiveness, promoting healthier plant growth and maximizing yield. The soil moisture, temperature and humidity sensors will update the real values and store them in the cloud. An IoT-based cloud computing network system for storing sensed data, enabling users to monitor and manage the collected information effectively.
