Evolution and Prospect of Rotary Steerable Drilling Technology

The rotary steerable system (RSS) is a type of the steerable drilling system that completes the steering function in real-time while the drill string rotates during drilling, which is the development direction of modern steerable drilling technology. RSS can integrate geometric and geological steering functions, allowing directional drilling to perform both geometric steering based on engineering parameters and geological steering based on geological parameters. Based on real-time monitoring of downhole conditions, it guides the drill bit to the optimal position in the reservoir for drilling. In response to the current research hotspots and issues in RSS, a review was conducted on the advanced technology of foreign rotary steering tools, and a summary was made of the progress made in wellbore trajectory control technology in China. Finally, in order to gain control over the future technological heights in the drilling field, a prospect was made for the future development direction of RSS in China.
