The discrete manufacturing industry in China is currently being transformed and upgraded. Digital transformation and intelligent upgrade is an inevitable choice for China’s discrete manufacturing industry, as intelligent manufacturing can promote the quality, efficiency, and competitiveness of discrete manufacturing. Digital workshop is a typical application of digitalization, automation, and IoT technology in manufacturing workshops, which integrates flexible manufacturing technology with process design systems, intelligent recognition technology, production organization systems, and other management systems to form an integrated manufacturing system with integrated information flow and automation properties. The digital workshop is a core component of modern industry and an organic integration of information technology and intelligent production and manufacturing technology. The typical characteristics of the discrete manufacturing industry have been analyzed, the technical architecture of digital workshops has been studied, the information flow and data interaction in digital workshops have been provided, and the system architecture of digital workshops has been designed. This provides a reference direction and basis for the planning and construction of digital workshops for discrete manufacturing enterprises in China.
