Effect of Soil Reinforcement Using Geotextile on Uplift Capacity of Shallow Foundation

The rapid urbanization resulted in the construction of more number of tall structures world over. These structures transmit not only large compressive forces but also apply considerable uplift forces on to the foundations. Many a times the shallow foundations with lower emebedment depth fail in offering resistance to the uplift forces. While application of geosynthetics is proved to be effective in increasing the bearing capacity of shallow foundaions against the downward acting forces, their application for improvement of the uplift capacity of the shallow foundation laid on the soils, require more detailed studies. In view of this, an attempt is made in this direction to study the influence of soil reinforcement using geosynthetic on the uplift capacity of shallow foundations. An experimental study is carried out on a footing model of size 100 mm × 100 mm embedded in clayey sand with a non-woven geotextile as the medium of reinforcement in a test tank of dimensions 500 mm × 500 mm × 600 mm. The study indicated that, the uplift capacity of shallow foundation increases with increase in dry density of the soil and the emebedment depth. Definite improvement in uplift capacity was observed when the soil above foundation is reinforced with the non-woven geotextile. The deformation state of the geosynthetic clearly indicated its participation in serving the reinforcement function even in the uplift mechanism.
