Swelling Characteristics of Bioenzyme Stabilized Black Cotton Soil

Bio-enzymes are gaining popularity among the construction engineers to stabilize the soils, especially the silty soils. Studies conducted on bio-enzyme stabilized soils have shown marked improvement in their performance. Classic approach of stabilization of soil is observed in the development of highways and airdrome pavements. The biggest advantage with the usage of bio-enzyme is its flexibility in the application in the field and the cost effectiveness. However, the data on the swelling properties of bio-enzyme stabilized black cotton soil (BC soil) is scanty in the literature. Hence the present investigation is aimed to understand the influence of bio-enzyme on the swelling behavior of BC soil. Commercially available bio-enzyme is used in the current study to stabilize the BC soil. The bio-enzyme stabilized BC soil samples are subjected to one dimensional swell—load tests in the oedometer. Parameters like, placement conditions (unit weight and moisture content), dosage of stabilizer, curing period are varied during the study. From the experiment results, it is revealed that the added bio-enzyme has significant impact on the swelling characteristics of BC soil samples.
