Use of solid wastes as supplementary admixtures to cement/lime treatment of soils has become quite common now. Numerous solid wastes are being researched to understand their efficacy as amendments to lime/cement stabilization. Eggshell waste is one type of waste that is generated in significant proportions in India. It has also been researched significantly for its reuse. However, exploration on calcined eggshell waste viz. eggshell ash (ESA) is meagre, especially in soil amelioration. This investigation attempted to explore the influence of using small quanta of ESA as auxiliary admixture to lime for the improvement of an expansive/swelling soil which is stabilized using the soil’s optimum lime content (OLC). A local soil was evaluated for its geotechnical characteristics and classified as a swelling soil. The unconfined compression strength (UCS) test was used for the identification of the OLC. The OLC treated soil was later modified using three trial doses of ESA viz. 0.25%, 0.5% and 1% ESA. The modified strengths of the trial specimens were studied over curing durations of two hours, three, seven and fourteen days to comprehend the competence of ESA modification. The outcomes revealed that 0.25% ESA was the ideal quantum which was able to augment the UCS of the lime improved soil. The investigation divulges that ESA has potential applications in soil improvement.

摘要
