Review of Unit Cell Concept in the Design of Ground Improvement Techniques

Design of different ground improvement methods such as densification method, consolidation method, reinforcement method, etc. is vital for effectively mitigating liquefaction and/or soil failure. Various geometrical modeling approaches were developed for decades to study the behavior of the treated soils. One of those simplified modeling approaches is the “Unit cell” concept. It became popular due to its suitability to solve a complex problem theoretically based on certain assumptions. Unit cell idealizes the behavior of a single column and the improved in-situ soil around it. This paper discusses the techniques and methods involved in unit cell idealization by encompassing recent advances and recommendations in various studies. Some important aspects of this unit cell approach for the experimental and numerical investigations on ground improvement techniques have been discussed in detail in this study. The study also highlights the effectiveness of the unit cell approach for modeling the ground improvement techniques.
