An Investigation on the Stabilization of Clayey Soil Using Poly Methyl Metha Acrylate (PMMA)

Soil stabilization is the procedure of replacing many soil qualities in order to create a better soil with adequate strength and stability to meet technical requirements. Clayey soil has a number of issues due to its poor physical and chemical stability, which causes fluctuations in volume, moisture content, form, and shape, among other things. These issues are a very severe concern for today's engineers. In this paper, the investigation of the effects of PMMA as an admixture on clayey soil is studied. The research was split into two parts. Using a free swell index test, the swelling property of clay soil was tested to see if it was suitable for stabilization. Next, the polymer was applied in different compositions (3, 6 and 9%) for various curing periods (3, 7 and 14 days) and the different resistance properties were evaluated. By mixing in PMMA, a rise in the compressive strength of the soil was achieved, which was verified with the help of the unconfined compressive test and California bearing ratio test. It has been found that with a composition of 6%, the strength of the soil is found to be maximum with 7 days curing i.e., 136.7 kPa that is almost 1.73 times that of the virgin soil. With a 6% composition and 3 days of curing, the bearing ratio reaches its maximum. As a result, we can conclude that adding PMMAto the soil has a good effect on the bearing ratio.
