Chemical Stabilization has been widely practised using additives like lime, cement, flyash and the combination of the above in soil stabilization. The extreme poor nature of the soil affects the engineering properties of the soil. Compressibility of the soil is one such property of the soil, where little emphasis has been given. The coefficient of consolidation (cv) signifies the rate at which a saturated soil undergoes one dimensional consolidation when subjected to an increase in pressure. The variation of cv with pressure has not received much attention in the past. In this paper the influence of different additives such as lime, cement and flyash on the coefficient of consolidation and compressibility characteristics of Cochin marine clay was studied. In order to study the effect of these additives, each additive was added in different percentages by weight of dry soil and one dimensional consolidation test was carried out. From the experimental investigations, results showed that there is significant improvement in the compressibility characteristics of the soil when the additives were added. The paper also highlights the variations in cv values with the applied pressure range and the type of additive used to stabilize soft clayey soils.
