Numerical Analysis of Rockfall in Bituminous Coal Mines Susceptible to Dynamic Loads

Rockfall is a common phenomenon observed in underground mines that often leads to multiple loss of lives and closure of mines for a longer duration. Coal mines being highly susceptible to dynamic loads pose always a serious concern for the evaluation of safety and stability. Rockfalls are generally pronounced due to repetitive dynamic loading events and unstable mining structures. Holmquist Johnson–Cook (HJC) model has been incorporated in the numerical analysis based study to predict the probability of rockfall in mines subjected to multiple impacts. It was observed during the analysis that strain accumulation and strain release caused due to repetitive loading events triggers the development of micro fractures that in turn on accumulation leads to the macro fractures thus leading to rockfall in mines. The results obtained during the study have been observed to be in good agreement with predetermined experimental results.
