Investigation of Dynamic Properties and Liquefaction Behavior of Sand-Tire Derivatives Mix for Geotechnical Applications

The proper disposal of scrap tires is an alarming issue of the recent times. Scrap tires, being durable in nature, are recommended for their use in civil engineering applications. Many recent studies reported the use of scrap tire derivatives as filling material in earthen embankments, drainage materials etc. The present study investigates the dynamic properties and liquefaction behavior of sand-tire chips and sand-tire crumbs mixes, for their possible application in liquefaction countermeasure techniques. A series of strain controlled cyclic triaxial tests were carried out with strain amplitude and confining pressures as variables. A sample of 100 × 200 mm was considered in the study. All the samples were prepared at a density index of 60% by using dry pluviation method. The dynamic properties and liquefaction behavior, in terms of the excess pore pressure ratio, for all the mixes are detailed in the paper. The results showed that the mix with tire crumbs is the most resilient towards liquefaction and have good damping behavior, but they showed lesser modulus than the mix with tire chips.
