The Origin of Agriculture and the Evolution of the “Broad Spectrum Revolution” Theory

The article critically examines the evolution and implications of the "Broad Spectrum Revolution" (BSR) theory, a pivotal framework in understanding the transition from hunter-gatherer economies to agriculture. The BSR posits that postglacial environmental disruptions and dwindling large-game resources forced late Pleistocene societies to diversified their diets, incorporting lower-ranked, labor-intensive foods like fish, shellfish, and seeds. This shift, framed through optimal foraging theory, emphasized efficiency-driven dietary expansion, where resource inclusion depended on caloric return rates relative to procurement costs. Over decades, the model integrated ecological classifications (K-selective vs. r-selective species) and quantitative methods to analyze archaeological evidence, including faunal remains and plant unilization patterns. However, recent discoveries such as early plant use in Middle Paleolithic sites challenge the BSR's timeline and assumptions. These findings suggests dietary broadening may have preceded the Holocene, complicating the theory's causal link to agricultural origins. Critiques also highlight methodological gaps, particularly the difficulty of reconciling zooarchaeological and paleoethnobotanical data, and the oversimplification of resource ranking based solely on size or caloric yield. While the BSR ramains influential, its limitations underscore the need for naunced, context-specific analyses, expecially in regions like China, where multidisciplinary appraoches to domestication dynamics and subsistence shifts are emerging. The article concludes by framing the BSR as a heuristic tool rather than a universal paradigm, advocating for adaptive theoretical frameworks that integrate ecological, technological, and cultural variables to unravel the complex pathways to agriculture.
