Effect of Layering of Soil on the Amplification of Train Induced Vibration

Railway induced ground vibration is growing concern which can led to structural vibration, cracks in nearby buildings, and instability of track embankment system. Railway track located in soft soil results in amplification of vibration due to resonance between train running speed and Rayleigh wave velocity of ground. In many situations, the soil is layered having different stiffness. In this study, numerical modelling has been carried out to find the effect of layering of soil on the amplification of train induced vibrations due to moving load. Modelling of track embankment system has been done using finite elements. A layered ground has been considered with soft soil in the top layer while stiff soil in bottom layer. The vibration has been recorded at different points of embankment. The study finds effect of soil stiffness by varying the Young’s modulus of soil layers. The thickness of the soil layers have been varied to conduct additional parametric study.
