The seismic hazard of an area can be estimated after the modeling of the probable ruptures in the area. The Empirical Green’s function (EGF) method stands out as a highly dependable technique that eliminates the need for computing the medium's response where the rupture occurs. Uttarakhand is situated within a seismic gap region, making it prone to seismic activity. The Uttarkashi region in the state of Uttarakhand was devastated by a major earthquake of magnitude (Mw 6.8) on October 20, 1991. In the present study, the 1991 Uttarkashi earthquake has been simulated at three stations using the Empirical Green Function technique given by Irikura (Eng Symp 151:151–156, 1986). The seismic event in Uttarkashi has been detected by thirteen monitoring stations within the strong motion array situated in the Uttarakhand Himalayas. The records from three stations where both the mainshock and aftershock of this earthquake are available have been used for the simulations using the EGF technique. Based on the quality of records, three stations have been selected at which strong motion records have been simulated. A comparison of the simulated and observed records shows the reliability of the simulation technique in modeling the Himalayan earthquakes.

摘要
