The Use of Landsat-8 and ASTER Satellite Imagery to Analyze the Environmental Impact of Artisanal Mining in Santong Bay

From all the minerals obtained from mining operations in Indonesia, it is reported that up to 20% of them came from artisanal or informal mining. Unlike large-scale industrial mining, artisanal mining brings various uncontrollable and undetected ecological and natural hazards, mainly land use conversion and contamination of nearby water bodies by mercury metal, which is the byproduct of gold extraction in artisanal mines. This can lead to severe health risks for the local population and wildlife. To assess this, we confirmed the Indonesian Body of Geological Resources research findings about the locations of potential mineral areas and artisanal mines in Santong Bay, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, which has mineralization and gold potential. This is done by analyzing the mineralization area detected by imagery band ratios, and the results are compared to the findings of the Indonesian Body of Geological Resources. The imagery is then analyzed to assess the impacts of land use change and mercury precipitation in nearby water bodies.
