Assessing the Potential of LAPAN A3 Satellite Imagery for Land Cover Monitoring
摘要
This study evaluates the capabilities of LAPAN A3, a small Indonesian satellite with a spatial resolution of 15 m and four multispectral bands (R, G, B, NIR), in land cover identification. By comparing its imagery with Landsat 8 and Sentinel 2, the study assesses LAPAN A3’s effectiveness using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) to classify various land cover types, including water, green vegetation, yellowing vegetation, and bare land. The results show that LAPAN A3’s imagery is comparable in resolution and quality to those of Landsat 8 and Sentinel 2, making it suitable for operational land monitoring. However, weak correlations were observed between the spectral bands of LAPAN A3 and the other satellites, with the highest R2 value of 0.3054 in the NIR band compared to Landsat 8, and 0.1711 in the red band compared to Sentinel 2. Additionally, the imagery from LAPAN A3 showed a significant 3 km georeferencing shift, necessitating manual rectification for accurate spatial analysis. While the satellite demonstrates the potential for filling data gaps caused by cloud cover in other satellites, further research is required to improve sensor calibration, georeferencing accuracy, and overall reliability for land cover monitoring in Indonesia.
