Political Sociology is a branch of sociology that studies the sociological analysis of political phenomena which range from State to civil society to other aspects such as citizenship, social movements, and the sources of social power. In simple terms, Political Sociology is the study of power and the relationship between societies and political conflicts. The ideologies of Political Sociology were discussed by the founding fathers of sociology such as Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, and Max Weber to theorists such as Gellner, Anthony Giddens, Jurgen Habermas, and Michael Mann. The sociology of politics covers a vast area of research including everything from revolutions to municipal elections, from historical studies of party systems to abstract theories of collective behavior. It would be impossible in a single essay to properly review the entire field of Political Sociology. Therefore, in this paper, we focus briefly on the basics of the discipline of Political Sociology with specifics to the Indian Context.
