Sociology of work maps the structural and phenomenological aspects of work. One of the most significant developments in the world of work in neoliberal times has been the emergence of gig work. The neoliberal logic associated with it lays emphasis on notions of autonomy, flexibility, and entrepreneurship. Reviewing a few empirical studies on work in the gig economy, this paper argues that the claims of autonomy, flexibility and entrepreneurship hide the varying forms of precarity involved in gig work. The paper proceeds to develop the argument by referring to the issues connected with the platform economy and algorithmic control. It also analyses the response of the workers and the state reflected in unionisation as well as the welfare measures.
