The paper seeks to construct a narrative of the low-end job among Malayalee Gulf migrants with a view to situate their transformative sojourn in the developmental map of the state of Kerala. Within the framework of a narrative paradigm, it examines qualitative empirical evidences to establish the role of the Gulf migration of the lower-class Malayalees in the making of the middle class as a predominant category in the social development of the state in the post-colonial era. The paper opens up a discussion on the agency played out by the lower-class Gulf migrants in the making of the much-debated “Kerala Model of Development” and tries to ascertain their agency in the emergence of Kerala society. It argues that the history of the post-independent modernity of the State and its developmental trajectory is intertwined with the pangs and perils of the lower-class Gulf migrants.
