The previous chapter offered a comprehensive introduction to the rationale behind the name of the Black Jade Age, its historical range (5500–4000 years ago), and how jade resources of dark green serpentine were replaced by varied light-colored tremolite jade rocks around 4000 years ago. Based on new archeological finds and fieldwork at actual sites of jade rocks, this introduction updates and revises the “jade age” scholarly discourse. The updates and revisions more accurately outline the uniqueness of the jade culture in central and western China distinct from that in northern and southern China. Based on the sources of jade materials and the evolution from old to new types of jade materials, I have explained the general origin and development of the jade culture in central and western China, and confirmed the domino effect of “eastward transportation of western jade” and its foundational role in the evolution of Chinese civilization.
