Metabolism encompasses the intricate set of biochemical processes that sustain life by converting nutrients into energy and cellular components. It comprises two primary pathways: catabolism, which breaks down complex molecules to release energy, and anabolism, which builds complex molecules from simpler ones using energy. The regulation of metabolism is achieved through both coarse and fine control mechanisms. Coarse control involves broader adjustments, such as changes in enzyme levels through gene expression and cellular compartmentalization, while fine control entails precise regulation of enzyme activity through allosteric interactions, covalent modifications, and feedback inhibition. These regulatory mechanisms ensure metabolic homeostasis, allowing cells to adapt to varying internal and external conditions. Understanding these controls is crucial for elucidating how metabolic balance is maintained and how metabolic disorders may arise in relation to defense and/or attack.
