The increasing demand for salubrious living environments warrants a holistic approach towards indoor air quality management. This strategy encompasses not only particulate contaminants but also gaseous pollutants such as ammonia. This paper investigates the performance of a portable air cleaner (PAC) equipped with an activated carbon filter that has a Carbon Tetrachloride Activity (CTC) rating of 100. The findings demonstrate a notable 342.3% enhancement in clean air delivery rate (CADR) for ammonia, in comparison to a CTC70 filter. Additionally, even when the CTC100 filter adsorbs 600mg of ammonia, it can still output 127.8 m3/hr of CADR—a figure that is 269% greater than that of a CTC70 filter adsorbed with 600mg of ammonia. This phenomenon suggests a significantly superior Cumulative Clean Mass (CCM) for CTC100 filter, as indicated by trend analysis. An odor intensity reduction, involving certified human olfactory assessments, indicates that a 90% decrement in ammonia concentration corresponds to a 60% reduction in odor intensity. Activated carbon filters with a CTC rating of 100 substantially augment the CADR for ammonia, along with its odor intensity. This first-of-its-kind correlation between ammonia reduction and odor intensity reduction, involving human scent detection, underscores the effectiveness of CTC100 filters for improving indoor air quality when used in PAC.
