Inguinal hernia is one of the most common surgical ailments affecting children. It generally occurs when contents of the abdomen such as bowel, omentum, or preperitoneal fat protrude through a defect in the inguinal area. The incidence of inguinal hernia in children is estimated to be 8 to 50 every 1000 live births in various series. In premature babies however, the incidence is higher and reaches approximately 20%. Despite varying incidence and prevalence reported in the literature, the lifetime chance of a person being operated for inguinal hernia is quite high, 27% in men and 3% in women. Most cases present within first year of life and there is a clear mare preponderance with male to female ratio 3:1 to 10:1 in various series.
