Stomas are an essential component of pediatric surgical practice. Given that a stoma is an opening of a hollow viscus onto the body surface, stomas in pediatric practice are created either along the intestinal tract (esophagostomy, gastrostomy, jejunostomy, ileostomy, appendicostomy, and colostomy) or the urinary tract (vesicostomy, suprapubic cystostomy, Mitrofanoff stoma (appendix), Monti (small bowel), ureterostomy or rarely, urethrostomy, pyelostomy, or nephrostomy). They may be either temporary or permanent in nature.
