Thoracic Trauma in Children
摘要
Trauma is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children more than 1 year of age. Thoracic trauma accounts for 5–12% of the trauma-related admissions. Despite their low incidence, chest injuries have high mortality because the thoracic cavity contains vital structures like the heart, lungs, and major vessels. Blunt injuries are more common when compared to penetrating injuries and these penetrating injuries are more common in adolescents which can be stab wounds or gunshot wounds. Different mechanisms of injury include motor vehicle accidents, fall from height, or child abuse. Isolated chest trauma is rare in children, because of their small-size multisystem involvement is more common. Pulmonary contusion rib fracture, hemo- and pneumothorax are the common injuries. Management with supportive therapy and tube thoracostomy if required are often sufficient.
