Changes and Characteristics of Total Vegetation Carbon Sequestration in China

Carbon sequestration is the process of capturing and safely storing carbon rather than releasing it directly into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. Terrestrial vegetation ecosystems are a popular area of research for carbon sequestration to address global warming, glacier melting, and other climate-related issues. Under terrestrial vegetation carbon sequestration CO2 is converted into organic carbon through plant photosynthesis fixation; it is often measured by plants’ NPP. China, the largest emitter of CO2, has committed to achieving carbon peaking by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060 in the Paris Agreement. This reflects the responsibility of a major nation. Achieving carbon neutrality requires a focus on both emission reduction and carbon sequestration. Emission reduction involves long-term planning, including energy revolution and industrial restructuring. Improving the capacity and level of carbon sequestration by terrestrial vegetation is another important measure to reach the goal of carbon neutrality. Therefore, based on satellite remote sensing data, this chapter focuses on the distribution and trends of vegetation carbon sequestration in China over the past 20 years. The aim is to summarize the year-by-year changes in the distribution pattern of China's total vegetation carbon sequestration and visually compare the differences in categorical descriptions provided by different satellite products.
