Private Information RetrievalPrivate information retrieval (PIR) is a fundamental cryptographic primitive to enable a client to retrieve a data item of his choice from a database without revealing any information on his query. Due to its wide variety of applications, PIR has been the subject of a large body of research and many efficient constructions and extensions have been proposed. In this survey, we review developments in PIR and related problems especially focusing on the information-theoretically secure schemes. We then provide the technical details of several state-of-the-art PIR schemes and their extensions to active security.
