Enhancing Supply Chain Efficiency Through Business Process Re-engineering: A Case Study of the Pak Thong Chai Noodle Factory, Northeastern Thailand

Business Process Re-engineering (BPR) is often acclaimed as a transformative tool for companies looking to improve their operations, yet practical, real-world applications of BPR can be complex, particularly in industries rooted in tradition. This study explores the sophisticated implement of BPR within the Pak Thong Chai Noodle Factory, a traditional noodle manufacturer embedded in the northeastern region of Thailand. The research presents the factory’s journey from a labor-intensive, conventional production line to a streamlined, efficient supply chain model empowered by BPR principles. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, combining case study, semi-structured interviews, workflow analysis, and performance data assessment, this study highlights the bottlenecks impacting the factory’s efficiency. The comprehensive BPR initiative encompassed the deployment of automation to supplant manual operations, supply chain reconfiguration for logistical optimization, and adoption of just-in-time inventory to curtail waste. This led to a substantial increase in productivity by 25% and inventory cost reductions of 40%, alongside significant gains in customer satisfaction. The study presents these findings in a manner that explains the tangible benefits and challenges of applying BPR to a traditional manufacturing setting. The narrative captures the human elements of change management and the strategic thinking behind process redesign. The significant improvements seen at the Pak Thong Chai Noodle Factory serve as compelling evidence of BPR’s ability to revitalize outdated manufacturing methods and offer valuable lessons for similar businesses contemplating operational modernization.
