Nasogastric and Orogastric Tube Insertion

Nasogastric (NG) or orogastric (OG) tubes as their name suggest are small tubes that are placed either through the nose or the mouth and their tip end in stomach. Dr. Abraham Louis Levin first described their use in 1921. Nasogastric tube is also known as Ryle’s tube in Commonwealth countries, after John Alfred Ryle. NG/OG tubes may be used for feedings, medication administration, treatment of drug overdose, or removal of contents from the stomach via aspiration, suction, or gravity drainage.
