Spinal anesthesia (SA) or subarachnoid block (SAB) is an integral part of anesthesia practice. In 1898, August Bier, with his assistant, performed spinal anesthesia in six patients using intrathecal cocaine. Even more than a century later, SA continues to be an indispensable anesthetic technique.
