Customers in the present internet era are inundated with a plethora of information. Rather than aiding, this information has diminished the decision-making process and led to customer dissatisfaction. Product recommendation systems (PRS) are widely employed in Internet commerce to address the problem of information overload and assist users in discovering relevant products and services. The present work aimed to analyse the existing literature in the corpus and identify its various aspects. The paper provides an overview of the basic functioning of PRS, differentiates between different types of PRS, and identifies the distinct themes found in the literature. The current paper highlighted PRS as a multidisciplinary field, with the majority of past studies belonging to the information technology and computer science domain, specifically focusing on the technological aspect. Aside from the technical aspect, the present paper discovered the important significance of PRS in customer behaviour and retail strategies, indicating a substantial lack of research in the marketing and management field. Toward the end, the paper also delineated the potential avenues for future scholars to explore.
