Every human being aspires to attain the top of their career. Failure to achieve such aspirations results in dissatisfaction, poor productivity, lack of interest and proper engagement in the career. This study explored the impediments and motivational factors for the career development of females in the construction industry. A quantitative survey was conducted among female professionals engaged in the construction industry in South Africa. Data were collected through a questionnaire survey administered to female professionals online through the South African Council for Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP). A purposive sampling technique was employed in the administration of the questionnaire. A total of 158 questionnaires were sent to the target population (158) online and 67 were returned. Data were analysed by using relevant descriptive (Chi-square, standard deviation and averages) and inferential statistical methods. Findings relative to impediments to female career development are family and social commitments, bureaucratic structures hindering access to further education and training and lack of industry-driven support for further education. The findings further revealed the motivational factors that most enhance female career development which are passion and dedication, remuneration and opportunity as well as congenial environments. Based on the findings, this study recommends that various opportunities should be made available with adequate support for female professionals to develop their skills and thrive in their chosen career.
