Society 5.0 requires the subsystems of government, university, industry, society and environment to be socially and digitally engaged in the pursuit of shared goals. This is aligned with the concept of the Fifth Industrial Revolution (5IR) which requires harmonious and synergistic collaboration between humans and the technology espoused by the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), allowing each to excel in their own domains, for the well-being of the planet and its inhabitants by focussing on sustainable and renewable resources. The built environment, which will one day envelop Society 5.0, is certainly overdue for a technological transformation. Education systems are grappling with how to integrate the 4IR into educational practice, so it appears providential to add 5IR into the mix. In this desktop study, the suitability of the Quintuple Helix Model of Innovation (5HIM) is explored as an analytical tool with which to interrogate the integration of 4IR into the Education 5.0 model relevant to the built environment (BE). The context of South Africa is used to explore what challenges the five individual yet intertwined ecosystems of the 5HIM may contribute to the development of a new BE education programme. The conclusion of the study is that a developing country known for its deep inequalities which are more likely to dampen revolutionary developments, than incubate innovate solutions to overcome its polarising socio-economic woes, could benefit from the deployment of the 5HIM to transform BE education and establish a robust and future-proof education framework.
