Empowering Engineering and Built Environment Professionals: Exploring Education 5.0 and the Quintuple Helix Model of Innovation

The global acceptance of the next phase of human development, termed the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), has gained traction since 2016. This is evidenced by the rapid, exponential fusion of technologies that have already profoundly disrupted virtually all industries and processes in the first world. The Fifth Industrial Revolution (5IR) is heralded to be the age of human governance of automated technologies and processes. Strategic visionaries in all sectors of society are calling on higher education institutions to similarly adapt, evolve or revolutionise their curricula, teaching and learning pedagogies to meet the need for skilled workers in the future. Education 5.0 is mooted as the equivalent revolution needed in the education and training sector to equip the current and next-generation human workforce with sufficient skills with which to navigate the 4 + 5IR’s inevitable changing landscape. A key objective of the paper is to introduce and explore the Quintuple Helix Model of Innovation (5HIM) as a potential avenue for empowering Engineering and Built Environment professionals (EBEPs) as a means to transform education in this field. A critical literature review was adopted in exploring the 5HIM and the Built Environment (BE) to demonstrate how the nexus of these two notions intersects with Education 5.0. A key finding that can be drawn from this review is that the 5HIM offers a holistic tool with which to design the inclusion of 4 + 5IR knowledge and concepts into an EBEP Education (5.0) Curriculum.
