In the construction industry, a competent project manager (PM) is responsible for up to 47% of a project’s success through the effective management of all its aspects. Additionally, the construction industry is recognised as the engine of economic growth in developed countries. However, existing PM competencies in construction lack regular updates to align with the industry’s dynamic nature. This study utilises two intensive rounds of literature review methods to consolidate PM competency data from various international guidelines and models. The first round has revealed that PM competencies significantly influence project success. It clarifies three competency approaches: attribute-based, performance-based, and an integrated approach, illustrating their relevance to PM success criteria and factors. Furthermore, the second round presents a comprehensive PM competency framework, categorising competencies into skills, knowledge, and core personality attributes. It also highlights the limitations of traditional competency models, emphasising the need for regular updates and broader competency coverage. In conclusion, this study serves as a valuable educational and evaluative resource for construction PM professionals. Furthermore, it is poised to enhance the quality, efficiency, and overall success of construction projects worldwide.
