Construction Workforce Profiling and Skill Gaps in Regional NSW: Situational Awareness and Strategic Directions
摘要
The construction industry faces various challenges that limit its growth and development. One of the biggest problems facing construction workers is labor shortages. This study aimed to create a strategic direction to address construction workforce profiling and skill gaps crucial to meeting the major public infrastructure pipeline’s demand and supply challenges and risks across market segments and jurisdictions in regional NSW of Australia. The research method was hinged on a high-level stakeholder’s collaborative research workshop that brought together ten (10) high-profile guest speakers in the construction industry to explore the challenge of skills gaps and workforce shortages and begin co-designing innovative solutions for the near future. The textual data were analyzed through a six-step thematic analysis process, identifying five key themes that address construction workforce and skill gaps: industry perception blocks attracting new workers such as young people, workforce diversity and inclusiveness, sustainable and modern construction techniques and technologies; and creating capacity and capability for multi-dimensional workforce in the construction sector. The findings’ implications guided toward understanding the existing construction workforce and skill gaps challenges. Thus, building a collaborative stakeholder pathway to design and proffer solutions adds to this critical problem. The result of this study would translate into practical research and training programs aimed at nurturing a skilled and diverse construction workforce in NSW and Australia.
