The use of solid waste treatment technology is essential for tackling issues related to urban sustainability, which are becoming more and more crucial due to the world's fast urbanization. Urban areas are hubs of economic activity and population growth, resulting in escalating levels of solid waste generation including household waste, commercial waste, construction and demolition debris, and hazardous waste. Each of these waste streams requires tailored treatment approaches to ensure proper handling and disposal, posing logistical and operational challenges for urban waste management systems. As a result, there is a pressing need for innovative solid waste treatment technologies that can efficiently process and dispose of urban waste while minimizing negative repercussions. Conventional waste management practices, such as landfilling and open dumping, are no longer viable options due to limited land availability and adverse environmental impacts. New approaches may include novel ideas for by-product utilization from urban wastes. While some technologies, such as incineration and waste-to-energy, offer opportunities for energy recovery and resource utilization, they also emit greenhouse gases and other pollutants that can contribute to air and water pollution. Balancing the environmental benefits and drawbacks of different treatment options is essential for promoting sustainable urban waste management practices. Achieving urban sustainability requires holistic approaches that integrate technological innovation with social engagement, policy interventions, and institutional capacity building. Furthermore, social and economic factors influence the adoption and effectiveness of solid waste treatment technologies in urban areas. In this chapter we highlight concerned efforts across multiple fronts, including technological innovation, policy support, public education, and community participation. By embracing integrated approaches and prioritizing resource conservation and pollution prevention, cities can move towards more resilient, livable, and sustainable futures.
